Case Study: Alkimos Desalination Plant

Client: Monitel

Location: Alkimos, Western Australia

Industry: Infrastructure

Sector: Geotechnical & Structural

Problem

The project required accurate monitoring of settlement changes in geotechnical layers during the pre-loading phase of the proposed ActiDAFF tank structure. Understanding these settlement changes was crucial to ensure the stability and integrity of the structure before construction.

Solution

To address this challenge, Sensly's monitoring software was central to the solution, facilitating real-time data collection and visualisation from various geotechnical sensors.

Sensly Monitoring Software: Sensly’s platform integrated seamlessly with the geotechnical sensors to provide a comprehensive monitoring solution. Key features included:

  • Real-Time Data Visualisation: Sensly’s software displayed real-time data from all monitoring instruments on an intuitive dashboard, allowing project engineers to track settlement changes continuously.

  • Automated Alerts and Notifications: Customisable alerts ensured immediate notification of any significant settlement changes, enabling prompt intervention and adjustments.

  • Advanced Data Analytics: Sensly's analytics tools helped engineers understand complex data patterns, correlating settlement changes with other geotechnical factors such as pore water pressure.

Sensor Integration:

  • In-Place Extensometers (IPX): Multiple sensors were installed at designated geotechnical layers to depths of 25 metres. Sensly’s software continuously monitored these sensors, providing precise data on the movement and compression of the soil layers.

  • Automated Settlement Profiler (ASP): The ASP, integrated with Sensly, utilised hydrostatic principles to deliver near real-time distributed settlement monitoring across the surface area before fill placement. This provided a comprehensive overview of settlement behaviour over a large area.

  • Vibrating Wire Piezometer (VWP): VWPs monitored changes in pore water pressure within the pre-load area. Sensly's software correlated this data with settlement changes, crucial for understanding the stability of the soil layers.

Results

The implementation of Sensly's monitoring software provided project engineers with reliable, continuous data, enhancing their decision-making capabilities regarding the settlement process. Key outcomes included:

  • Informed Decision Making: The real-time insights from Sensly’s software enabled engineers to detect when the settlement of the pre-load area was slowing down and nearing completion, allowing construction to commence with confidence.

  • Enhanced Structural Integrity: The precise data and timely alerts ensured that the ActiDAFF tank structure's stability and integrity were maintained throughout the pre-loading phase.

  • Successful Project Execution: The use of Sensly’s software proved instrumental in achieving the project’s objectives, showcasing the importance of advanced geotechnical monitoring in large-scale construction projects.

The successful integration of Sensly’s monitoring software with geotechnical instruments underscored its critical role in ensuring structural stability and project success.
